While I too question the affordability argument, I also agree with your point about quality of life. The modernist experiment with housing "towers in the park" has shown itself to be dehumanizing, and most public housing towers in the US have been or are now being demolished in favor of safer, more human-scaled, ground-related housing. I do not believe that we need to sacrifice human-scaled architecture for the sake of density either, as relatively high levels of density can be achieved with mid- and creative low-rise development.

Hi Sharmila,

Good to hear from you. I was wondering what happened after that site visit...

Bummer that the developers didn't tell BEFORE you paid the advance that all the land is forest land.

Yes, the prices in Khandala/Lonavala are going crazy; as they are in many other places. People seem to have an insatiable appetite for land and property. Was just reading recently that (at least regarding the property scene in Bombay) more than 40% of the buyers are investors and not actual users. That, to me, points to a bubble which can burst at the slightest sign of trouble - much like it did for Navi Mumbai in the late 90s. The problem is the herd instinct. Right now, Alibaug, Karjat and Lonavala are the hot destinations. Tomorrow, it might be a little further - Ratnagiri, Kamshet and Igatpuri maybe?
